“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.”
- J. R. R. Tolkien
I have personal preferences about things that make up a large part of my personality. I like indie music and well written TV shows (like West Wing and Parenthood). I really like reading theological books and my preference in Bible translation is ESV. I prefer slow worship songs in church and don’t…
You don’t have to determine or decide what your identity is because God has already chosen to reveal it.
God has, in his kindness, chosen to speak to us. What this means is we don’t need the speculation of philosophy or religion. We need the revelation of God. We need God to tell us who he is, and we need God to tell us who we are.

We accomplish huge things by staying faithful in the small.
Shame is an equal opportunity destroyer.
Never automatically assume that you are right. Always be teachable.

Shame, disgrace, sadness, depression, hurt, confusion, and brokenness are so so so small compared to grace. Grace is so vast and so overwhelming compared to disgrace. In the middle of sadness and shame it is hard to see anything else. You get stuck in a rut that feels impossible to get out of. Loneliness entangles your thoughts and slowly drags you down. But these things are not true. They warp the Truth. God’s word is Truth. Period. End of story. His words are absolute. Unquestionable. Unarguable. Unwavering.
Being in a place of dealing with all these emotions is consuming. It stops movement. It can be exhausting. Shame and sadness take over every aspect of your life when you let them. They dictate your perspective, your attitude, your thoughts, your words, your actions. They literally tear apart and destroy. Shame will eat you alive. Sadness will ravage you. You were never called to carry that. Ever. It is not truth.
Redemption is bigger. Grace speaks louder. There is Love more vast than you can comprehend. This Love is constantly chasing you in the middle of your feelings of unworthiness and of being ruined. You are not ruined. This Love is persistent and will not be discouraged by your belief that you don’t deserve it. It is undaunted by your stubbornness. Nothing is too big for it to conquer. Nothing. That would defeat the entire purpose of Jesus coming. He brought us back to Him. He redeemed us. He forgave us. He took away everything separating us from Him. It’s gone. He conquered ALL. And His words are Truth. He can say who you are because He’s the One who gave identity to you in the first place. People and emotions did NOT.
He chose you. He gave you worth. He brought you back. His words and His view of you are not up for debate. Your view of yourself is :)
His voice is more than these things that try to tear down. Identity should be based on Truth, not on feelings and hard seasons in life. Grace is so much bigger than disgrace. Redemption is so much bigger than shame. Love is so much bigger than stubbornness. If God says it, it must be so. I can’t stop thinking that.
“I was still. And I was under your spell, when I was told by Jesus all is well. So all must be well.”
